Clinical Epidemiology & Systems Medicine in Ageing

Preventive Cardiology and Preventive Medicine

Our team is dedicated to studying common, complex ageing-related diseases that impose a high burden on society, in particular cardiovascular disease. Using an integrated systems medicine approach, we aim to achieve a deep understanding of clinical and subclinical pheno- and endotypes. We do this by characterising and analysing disease at all stages – from before clinically-established disease (subclinical stage), through to its development, progression and sequelae or cure. Our holistic approach reflects all levels that influence disease. This includes deep phenotyping of the individual and his/her environment, using sequential multi-omics data, advanced medical-technical examinations including organ-level imaging and a thorough inventory of their lifestyle, social situation and other environmental exposures.

To achieve these goals, we design and conduct prospective population and clinical studies, thereby establishing large biodatabases such as the Gutenberg Health Study. The data are analysed by a multidisciplinary team covering expertise in clinical (bio)medicine, molecular biology and biochemistry, bioinformatics and statistics/AI. The insights obtained are leveraged to identify novel therapeutic targets and to develop diagnostic and prognostic applications, as well as monitoring therapies.
