Molecular Mechanisms of Neuronal Ageing

My group is interested in molecular pathways that interfere with physiological and pathological processes of neuronal ageing. We aim to elucide how resilient ageing can be achieved and why not only certain individuals but also certain brain regions seem to be more resilient towards the ageing process than others are. For these purposes, we use cellular and animal models of healthy ageing, accelerated ageing and diseased ageing (e.g. Alzheimer’s disease) and elucidate the mechanisms that transfer individuals from one state to the other (loss or gain of resilience). We apply proteomics, transcriptomics and functional assays, combined with pharmacological or microbial treatment (e.g. fecal material transfer). Another focus of our recent work is to evaluate quality of ageing and to correlate it to cognitive functions using frailty indexing or muscular parameters (sarcopenia).
